Dear NAHRA Members and Friends,
The Board continues to make progress on several initiatives as we work to address declining membership and Field Test participation. The rule changes outlined in the June President's Press take effect in January 2027, alongside the release of the revised rulebook. Together, these updates are intended to improve clarity, consistency, and accessibility for current and prospective members.
We greatly appreciate the feedback we've received. The overwhelming majority of responses have been supportive of the Board's direction. At the same time, several members have raised thoughtful questions and concerns, and we would like to address them directly.
Invitational Name
We recognize the importance of our Canadian members and greatly value their contributions to NAHRA. Currently, however, there are no NAHRA clubs located in Canada; all Canadian members belong to U.S.-based clubs. For that reason, the title NAHRA National Invitational is both accurate and appropriate.
Adding "National" provides important clarity for people outside the organization—one of the audiences we are actively working to reach. For someone discovering NAHRA for the first time, the title immediately signals that this is our premier event representing all affiliated clubs. Future marketing efforts will reinforce that message.
Senior Stake Name Change to Master
Renaming the Senior stake to Master aligns with NAHRA’s Master Hunting Retriever and Grand Master Hunting Retriever titles. It also matches the AKC's highest stake, creating greater consistency across organizations rather than confusion. Competitors who participate in both venues will immediately recognize they are competing at the highest level. This is one of several initiatives to make NAHRA more approachable and to encourage greater participation.
Regional Field Tests
Regional Field Tests have historically included the Senior (Master) stake, so formally recognizing it would require only a modest investment in ribbons. In addition, the Board has already approved a modification allowing dogs that have qualified for one level to enter the next level at a Regional to pursue their next title. Both actions underscore the importance of recognizing our successful dogs and, hopefully, will increase participation.
2x and 3x Points
The proposed 2x and 3x point structure was one of several concepts explored to help address the feasibility of earning the GMHRCH title. After receiving member feedback, the Board is revisiting this proposal, evaluating alternative approaches, and will share additional information as those discussions progress.
Hunter Single Marks
Requiring a minimum distance for Hunter single marks does not necessarily ensure that the marks include the factors needed to prepare dogs for Intermediate. It has also created challenges for clubs that commonly combine Hunter with other stakes. This approach gives judges the flexibility to build quality tests while adapting to each site's conditions. Additionally, these were the only marks subject to a minimum distance requirement. Every other stake relies on judges to design appropriate tests based on terrain, cover, wind, and other field conditions. Rather than prescribe a fixed distance, the Board chose to more clearly define the purpose and intent of the single Hunter marks, along with an applicable point-of-origin restriction. The plan is to cover this modification in all future judges' clinics.
Late Entries
The late-entry process with the Hunt Test Secretary was piloted in the West Region. It generated additional entries and attracted new NAHRA members. Offering late entries remains entirely optional. Clubs that choose to offer late entries through Hunt Test Secretary set their own deadlines, restrictions, and requirements to address concerns such as running order, bird availability, and last-minute registrations. As with any new initiative, the Board will continue to evaluate the results. If the late-entry option does not demonstrate long-term value, we will be the first to recommend discontinuing it.
In Summary
The Board is also working on several additional initiatives not covered in this update, and we continue to welcome member feedback on new ideas and issues of concern.
We recognize that not every member will agree with every decision we make. Our responsibility is to carefully consider all viewpoints, evaluate what is best for the organization as a whole, and make decisions that support NAHRA's long-term success.
Our goal remains the same: to strengthen participation, improve accessibility, and preserve the traditions and integrity that make NAHRA unique. We appreciate your continued support and encourage you to stay engaged as we move forward together.
