NAHRA President’s Message

Spring 2020

Hello everyone, I hope this letter finds you all healthy and safe.  I have had to modify this letter multiple times.  Originally it was a welcome to spring and the kick of our NAHRA events message.  But now it’s time to inform you all on the current status of the organization and let you know how we are handling the COVID-19 situation.  I will try to keep this as short and to the point as possible, but there is a lot to go over.

First off, I want to give you an update on our NAHRA election that was held early this year; Phil Hines was elected as NAHRA’s Vice President, Dennis Nichols is the new Treasurer, Bob Gray will continue as the Alaska regional director, and Larry Houseman is the new east regional director.  Congratulations to all of you.  Also, a special thanks is much overdue to those that have left the NAHRA board that includes former treasurer John Giudice, former Vice President Harry Williams, and former East RD, Jim Hundemer.  The next time you see or speak to any of them please tell them thank you.  In other board position news, Harry Williams has agreed to accept the position of member at large, his primary focus will be on judging standards and compliance.

As many of you know, only one NAHRA test has been held so far this year.  It looking like there will not be any tests through May or even longer.  NAHRA asks that clubs and members continue to work with your regional director when canceling.  It is our hopes that these test can be rescheduled for later in the year.  When canceling, please make sure you inform your regional director, Rosemary and Janet at huntsecretary right away.  The NAHRA office will need a new or revised application when tests are rescheduled.  If you have any questions please reach out to your regional director.  They should be your first point of contact.  They have all done an excellent job keeping the NAHRA EBOD informed with their local club situations.

There has been many questions regarding the 2020 NAHRA Invitational, and if it will be held this year or not.  The 2020 IC, has recommended postponing this event until 2021.  The NAHRA EBOD has worked closely with and fully supports the IC’s decision.  The central region will now be hosting the 2021 Invitational June 16-19, 2021.  Many of the details will be staying the same.  Please watch the Invitational website for the latest details.  Also of note, the NAHRA BOD has updated the qualification requirement and rules regarding the NAHRA Invitational.  This will be in effect for the 2021 Invitational.  The NAHRA BOD, took the data and comments gathered by the memberships input from the survey that went out.  Based on the data collected is our hope that this will not only make the Invitational more prestigious, but also add participation to both the Invitational and weekend tests.  Details can be found on the NAHRA website, under policy and rule changes.  Lastly, we want to thank the Spokane Bird Dog Association for being understanding and flexible during this time.  Originally SBDA had agreed to host the Invitational in 2021, but agreed to move their event to 2022.  Congratulations and a big thank you is in order to the Spokane Bird Dog Association and the west region.

With the lack of events this year, NAHRA finds itself in a less than desired financial situation.  Our office hours will be greatly reduced for the time being.  Please be patient if you are trying to contact the office.  The best method for now, will be to reach out to your regional director first, then if needed, reach out to a member of the EBOD, and lastly reach out to Rosemary.  She will still be checking messages and emails and prioritize them as needed.  We will also be postponing our NAHRA High Point dog award for 2020.  We will bring it back as soon as we have a full calendar of events.

Moving forward, we need your help more than ever.  Many have asked what you can do to help.  Most importantly we need you to renew your memberships if you have not done so already.  Secondly, reschedule events with the hopes that local or federal laws will allow tests to resume.  The NAHRA BOD is working with our loyal sponsors and members and are finalizing details for multiple fundraisers that will be rolled out in the near future.  We are also planning on bringing the NAHRA calendar back, more details on that will rolled out this fall.  With the social distancing mandates that are out there we will likely only be able to do these fundraisers online.   Please keep an eye on both the NAHRA website and the NAHRA Facebook page for details, and do what you can to support us.

Again, I want to apologize for the late message.  We will get through this together, but we all have to do our part to flatten the curve.  Events will return, the health and well-being of our family, NAHRA members and participants is more important right now.  We will keep you updated as things change.  It may not be in the form of a Presidents letter, so please keep an eye on our website and Facebook page.  Again, thank you all for your continued support.  As always, please reach out to me directly with any questions.  Hope to see you at a test sooner than later!
